Obama Criticizes President Trump on Iran Deal

President Trump announced that the U.S. will withdraw from the Iran Nuclear agreement deal and would impose new sanctions.  The plan, which was signed in 2015, was a deal made between Iran and five permanent members of the UN Security Council. The U.S., France, China, Russia and Germany, make up this council. According to BBC, Iran was to “limit the size of its stockpile of enriched uranium – which is used to make reactor fuel but also nuclear weapons.” The plan also includes the modification of a heavy water facility to prevent the production of plutonium that would be suitable for a bomb.

Now, the U.S. is pulling out of that deal and former President Barack Obama is criticizing President Trump’s decision. “Indeed, at a time when we are all rooting for diplomacy with North Korea to succeed, walking away from the JCPOA risks losing a deal that accomplishes — with Iran — the very outcome that we are pursuing with the North Koreans,” Obama said in a statement. “That is why today’s announcement is so misguided.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden, agreed with the former President about his disapproval on Trump’s decision, by calling it “A profound mistake.” He went on to add that it “would put Iran on the path to developing nuclear weapons without diplomatic recourse,” Biden said in a statement.

“This wholly unnecessary crisis could ultimately put the safety of our country and our fellow citizens, including thousands of men and women in uniform serving across the Middle East, at risk by setting us back on a path to war with Iran,” Biden added. Read more about this story on CNN here.

The Iran deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was instituted by Obama during his administration. Considering Trump’s efforts to create peace in Korea, many are wondering what his motive for the break in the Iran plan is. Do you agree with Obama that the move is misguided? 12% agree with former President Obama, while 88% believe Trump is hoping to achieve a better plan.
