Melania Trump has just announced her initiative plan as her role of first lady. The “Be Best” campaign is aimed to focus on the well-being of children. She announced the launch of the long-awaited campaign during an announcement in White House Rose Garden. According to NBC Miami, the campaign’s goal is to generate public awareness and to encourage parents to teach children how to be good citizens. “Children deserve every opportunity to enjoy their innocence. Every child should know that it is safe to make mistakes and that there are supportive adults and friends nearby to catch them if they fail,“ Mrs. Trump said.
In her White House announcement, the first lady stated that she has received letters from kids who have been bullied or threatened on social media. Mrs. Trump said she knows people are skeptical about her discussing the issues on hand, but it will not stop her from doing what is right. In addition, the campaign will also focus on opioid abuse. According to NBC Miami, the first lady hopes children will learn to be kind, not bully on social media or anywhere else, and stay away from drugs.
“If we truly listen to what our kids have to say, whether it be their concerns or ideas, adults can provide them the support and tools they need to grow up to be happy and productive adults who contribute positively to society and their global communities,” she said during her announcement. Former first ladies have tackled similar initiatives. For example, Rosalynn Carter spoke widely on mental illness, Nancy Reagan urged children to “Just Say No” to drugs, and Michelle Obama urged children to “Let’s Move” during her campaign to fight child obesity. Therefore, it is common for first ladies to tackle mental or child initiatives. After all, children are the future. Melania Trump’s campaign seems fitting with today’s bullying, mental health and opioid issues. What are your thoughts on the first lady’s “Be Best” initiative? Do you think it will go far and be a success? 88% of us think she will do it right and the campaign will be a success, while 12% believe it won’t go anywhere.
