Iowa Bans Abortion With ‘Fetal Heartbeat’ Law

Iowa’s governor has banned all abortion in the state. Governor Kim Reynolds signed legislation to ban all abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected. “I believe that all innocent life is precious and sacred, and as governor, I pledged to do everything in my power to protect it. That is what I am doing today,” Reynolds said. According to USA Today, the bill was reportedly signed under tight security in the Iowa Capital.

The law will go into effect on July 1 if it gets the final approval and the court doesn’t stop it. According to USA Today, “the law will require physicians to conduct an abdominal ultrasound to test for a fetal heartbeat on any woman seeking an abortion. If a heartbeat is detected, a physician cannot perform an abortion.” The law will be called the “fetal heartbeat law.”

According to the report, “a fetal heartbeat can be detected about six weeks into a pregnancy and often before a woman realizes she’s pregnant.” Read more about this story on USA Today here.
